Stokelan Drive Christian holds 6th annual Free to Run
On Saturday, September 17, the Malden Stokelan Drive Christian Church held their sixth annual Free to Run race. The race is held each year in memory of Debra Algood with the proceeds going to worthy causes. This year, the money will go to an area food bank.
A total of 37 participants showed up to run in the popular event. Entrants could choose to take part in either a one mile run/walk, a 5K (3.1) mile run, or a 10K (6.2 mile) race. Participants were subdivided by sex and age.
Since the mile run/walk was considered a fun run, finish places were not recorded.
In the 5K (3.1 mile) race, the overall female winner was Rebekah McKuin, who rounded the course in 25:24.
Female winner in the 15 and under category was Alexis Cobb in 29:09. Tanner Miller came in at 31:34 for second place.
Rebekah McKuin led the 20-29 group. Second was Taylor Miller in 31:35. Danielle Matthews came in third in 36:32.
Nikki Slavings got first in the 30-39 category with a time of 29:08. Candi Matthews came in second in 35:46. Michelle Darby took third in 36:43.
Overall male winner in the 5K was Scotty Matthews who ran the course in 19:42.
Patrick Wheeler took first in the 15 and under race with a time of 24:19.
The 20-29 group went to Bobby Matthews with 44:02.
Scotty Matthews earned first in the 30-39 grouping. J.B. Matthews got second in 20:22. Adam Mathias ran 30:03 for third place.
The 40-49 category was topped by Shawn Selby with 69:35, followed by his brother, Kyle Selby, in 69:35.
In the 10K (6.2 mile) race, the overall female winner was Laura Pepon, with a time of 55:48. Second place was Carrie Haynes who finished the distance in 70:34.
Overall male winner in the 10K was Travis Matthews with a time of 40:05.
In age 16-19 category, first place went to Patrick Matthews in 45:30.
Ages 20-29, Travis Matthews took first as well as first overall. Drew Strickland placed second in 51:22. Andy Matthews got third in 54:00.
Frankie Salinas topped the 30-39 group with 46:17. Second in that group went to Dave Pepon in 55:47.
Sam Moncier finished first in the 40-49 group with 46:59. Michael Harris followed in 47:50.
In the 50-59 category, Gerald Jackson ended in first with 49:54.
After the race, Carolyn Aden presented every participant with a completion medal, and took the opportunity to honor Wanda Matthews as the only run/walker in the 90-99 age bracket.
