JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Backed by a pitching gem from Trey McDaniel and an offense that keeps rolling, the Charleston Fighting Squirrels are headed back to the World Series.

The Squirrels defeated the Buckley Bombers 7-0 last week to claim the Senior Babe Ruth Midwest Plains Regional championship in Junction City, Kansas, and advance to the World Series in Ephrata, Washington.

It’s the fourth time in program history the Squirrels have made it to the national tournament and first since 2014.

The Squirrels continued their dominant run from last week’s state tournament run, winning three of the five games by the 10-run mercy rule and outscoring their opponents 49-8.

Charleston’s closest game in the regional was a 7-5 win over Cottonwood Valley (Kan.) in pool play.

McDaniel tossed a no-hitter to clinch the championship. The Greenville High School graduate, who will pitch for Southern Illinois University, struck out 14 and walked none. Only two runners reached base safely, both due to errors.

Charleston (39-6) struck early against the Bombers, pushing three runs across in the top of the first inning. McDaniel gave himself the early lead, smoking a single down the third base-line to make it 1-0.

Palmer Campbell followed with a two-run triple for a 3-0 advantage.

Ty Householder made it 4-0 after an RBI single in the second. During that same play, Garrison Keene was able to cross the plate following an error from Buckley. Braden Cox made it 6-0 with another RBI single.

The Squirrels added an insurance run in the top of the fifth after a balk allowed Wyatt Pratt to score from third.

Charleston, which has won its last 10 postseason games by outscoring opponents 102-15, finished with 11 hits against the Bombers.

The Squirrels (39-6) got into the title game by beating another Missouri team, the Wayne County Lumberjacks, 11-1 in five innings in the semifinal earlier Monday.

Austin Hicks allowed just one run when Wayne County’s Cole Dickerson doubled to bring in Tristan Holmes in the top of the fifth.

The Squirrels had eight hits against the Lumberjacks. Wyatt Pratt finished with two hits, including a two-run triple. Cox had two hits and three RBIs.

The Senior Babe Ruth World Series begins August 5 and runs through August 12.
